Professional Tilers in Cardiff, Barry & South Wales

While tiling over old tiles is often pitched by fast-turnaround contractors as a cheap, quick fix, it introduces serious structural and finishing risks for long-term homes:  Hidden Substrate Failures: If the original tiles have compromised adhesive, movement, or underlying moisture damage, your new tiles will inevitably crack or lift.Loss of Room Space & Awkward Thresholds: Doubling tile layers creates awkward height differences at doorways, raises floor levels above skirting boards, and forces adjustments to door clearances.Weight Restrictions on Walls: Standard plasterboard walls have strict weight limits (typically 20kg to 32kg per square metre including adhesive and grout). Adding a second layer of heavy porcelain often exceeds these limits, risking complete wall failure.Compromised Waterproofing: In wet areas like showers, overlaying tiles bypasses proper tanking and waterproofing, making water ingress and hidden rot far more likely. At Vale Renovations, we refuse to cut corners. We remove old tiles down to the substrate, inspect the surface, and complete thorough prep work before laying a single new tile.

Large-format tiles (such as 600x600mm or 600x1200mm) are generally much better for making a small bathroom feel spacious and open.Fewer Grout Lines: Fewer grout joints create an unbroken, seamless surface that tricks the eye into perceiving a larger floor and wall area.Reduced Visual Clutter: Dense grids of small mosaic or subway tiles can make compact Cardiff and Vale bathrooms feel busy and enclosed.Modern, High-End Finish: Large-format rectified porcelain paired with colour-matched grout delivers a clean, luxury aesthetic. Note: Large tiles demand a completely flat, perfectly levelled substrate; any uneven wall or floor will cause noticeable lippage. That is why our team spends the necessary time on subfloor preparation and wall levelling before installation begins.

A skilled tiler laying standard ceramic tiles on a clear, pre-levelled floor typically completes 8 to 12 square metres per day. However, for bespoke, high-specification projects across Cardiff and the Vale, that rate changes depending on the complexity:Large-Format Porcelain & Natural Stone: Often ranges between 4 to 6 square metres per day due to back-buttering, mechanical levelling systems, and heavy handling.Intricate Layouts & Wet Rooms: Detailed herringbone, mosaic features, envelope cuts around wet room drains, and complex window reveals require precision cutting and take longer.Substrate Preparation & Tanking: Waterproofing, levelling compounds, and uncoupling membranes take dedicated time before any tiling can start. Be cautious of builders claiming to tile 20+ square metres in a single day. Rushed tiling inevitably leads to uneven joints, poor adhesive coverage, and premature failure. We prioritise care and precision over speed on every build.

The most common tiling errors occur from rushed work, poor preparation, and lack of trade experience:  Inadequate Substrate Preparation: Tiling over uneven, dusty, or unprimed surfaces leads to hollow tiles that crack under foot traffic.Skipping Waterproof Tanking: Failing to apply a complete waterproof membrane behind wet room or shower tiles causes slow water leaks behind walls.Tile Lippage (Uneven Edges): Failing to use proper tile levelling clips or skipping floor leveller creates raised tile edges that look poor and pose tripping hazards.Incorrect Adhesive Coverage ("Dot and Dabbing"): Plastering adhesive in small dots behind the tile instead of combing a full, solid bed leaves weak, hollow voids prone to cracking.Poor Layout Planning: Starting in a corner without dry-laying results in awkward, paper-thin tile slivers at visible edges and corners. Backed by over 35 years in the building trade, Vale Renovations ensures complete adhesive coverage, laser-straight alignment, and proper waterproofing on every installation.
